William Shakespeare once wrote, "What's in a name?" The answer of course is there is a lot in a name. In the Bible for instance, names reveal the nature and character of the individual. The name "I AM" (or Jehovah) in the Bible indicates God's eternal nature and that He can be whatever He needs to be in any given situation. Below are a few of the names of God in the Bible from blueletterbible.org. El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) El Elyon (The Most High God) Adonai (Lord, Master) Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah) Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals) Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There) Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You) El Olam (The Everlasting God) Elohim (God) Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts) Not only do names reflect the character or nature of an individual in the Bible, but people tend to take on the attributes of the names they are given. Abram, did not bear a child until his name was changed from Abram to Abraham. God stated, "Neither shall thy name any more be called, Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee" (Genesis 17:5). When you are facing difficulties, meditate on the names of God knowing that you can trust Him to be sufficient to deliver you based on the character and nature contained within the meaning of those names. Also, get into the Word and speak the names over yourself that God has called you, watch yourself take on that nature, and your life be transformed! Comments are closed.
