This one thing is needful

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.  Luke 10:42

Often when things in our lives are not going well, the tendency is to try harder to improve them.  This need to improve a situation may extend to a career, academic performance, or even a relationship.  Sometimes, we need to take a step back though and realize that God has promised to perfect that which concerns us (Psalm 138:8).  In today's Scripture in Luke 10, there was a lot of work that needed to be done as Jesus went into Mary and Martha's house.  Martha was trying earnestly to get everything that needed to be done accomplished and complained to Jesus that her sister Mary was not helping her accomplish those tasks because Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to His word instead (Luke 10:39-40).  Jesus responded to Martha's complaint by saying, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her (Luke 10:41-42).  Essentially, Jesus was saying that at His feet are the solutions to every need we have.  When the disciples were fishing and had not caught any fish, Jesus told them to "launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught" (Luke 5:4).  Peter responded by doing the one thing that was needful in listening to Jesus's word when he said, "Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net" (Luke 5:5).  Consequently, the disciples caught a great multitude of fishes!  Listening to the word of the Lord brought the disciples solutions that toiling and trying to do things in their own strength could never accomplish!  It would behoove us to be still at times and sit at His feet knowing that He is God (Psalm 46:10).
