The Power of Life and Death

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.  Proverbs 18:21

There is power in our tongue and consequently in the words we speak!  The tongue is a very powerful instrument that can be used to bring forth life or produce death.  Essentially, God has created things in a way that our destiny is in our own hands by utilizing the words we speak.  In James 3, the Bible explains that "the tongue can no man tame" (James 3:8).  This
passage goes on to say that "out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing" (James 3:10).  

We have not really understood the power of words and the power of a blessing.  Often, we have limited speaking a blessing to saying "God bless you" after someone sneezes.  Nonetheless throughout the Old Testament and even in the New, speaking words of blessing carried weight, authority, and changed the course of people's lives!  We see the weight of Isaac speaking a blessing over Jacob's life (Genesis 27:28-30) carried in that Jacob became
known as directly from the genealogy of Abraham, from the lineage of Christ, and Israel
himself!

The small tongue can control things greater than itself!  James 3:3-4 explains how a small bit in a horse's mouth can control the whole horse or how a small rudder can control a huge  ship.  The tongue is the same way.  James 3 goes on to say that the tongue "is set on fire of hell" (James 3:6).  The preceding passage of Scripture means that the enemy tries to get us to use our tongues to speak words of destruction.  Let us speak words of blessing over ourselves, loved ones, communities, and nation!
